Veteran's Administration Hospital in Birmingham, AL

According to the Veterans Alcohol and Drug Dependence Rehabilitation Program, the VA provides medical, social, vocational, and rehabilitation therapies to eligible alcohol and drug dependent Veterans.

The programs offer various forms of treatment including detoxification, rehabilitation, and psychiatric care. Treatment programs are located in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and clinics.

And they are a joke!  I can state this with clarity for in the four and a half years I was married to a long-term chronic substance abuse/alcoholic Vet with mental health issues; I have had to deal with all of the Veterans Administration Hospital and auxiliary programs and services within the state of Alabama.

I want you to understand two issues prior to further discussion:

  1. We, the taxpayers and citizens (veterans and active military included) of this nation, provide the funds that the Veteran’s Administration and Veteran’s Hospitals squander on fruitless services and programs, particularly in the areas of substance abuse/alcoholism, mental health and homeless Veterans resources; and
  2. Veterans cannot afford to complain about lack of patient care, lack of viable and successful services and programs, especially homeless vets, because this is the only medical care that is available for them.

What qualifies me to make the statements I am about to address:

  1. I work with Homeless Vets and Veterans on a daily basis, particularly the homeless, the substance abusers, the alcoholics, mental health issues and dual diagnosed;
  2. I am a solider, I am a Veteran and I served my country and I am blessed that I have other insurance coverage that allows me to bypass any of my Veteran Benefits – after dealing with VA and their hospitals, I would not be caught dead in one in the state of Alabama.
  3. 5267 pages of inside documentation to back any claims that I allege in mistreatment, abuse or bias of our Veterans, their families by the VA.
  4. DOJ and DOD federal investigations into the VA Administration and their hospitals in the past two years on order of the President of the United States, with the first shot being the dismissal and firing of the Director of the VA Director in Central Alabama. The VA Hospitals in other counties in Alabama are currently being or beginning to be investigated for severe offenses.

In the next series of blogs, I will be discussing Veterans services and programs within the VA in Alabama.
